What is cannabis?
Cannabis, commonly referred to as marijuana, weed, or pot, is an umbrella term for all products derived from the cannabis plant. This plant is comprised of hundreds compounds called cannabinoids and terpenes. The most well-known compounds found in cannabis are delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and cannabidiol, or CBD. Each compound has a unique effect on our brains and bodies, and have been known to offer numerous health and wellness benefits.
Medicinal vs. Adult Use
In New Jersey, the use of cannabis for both medicinal and recreational purposes is legal. However, there are some unique benefits to acquiring your New Jersey Medical Marijuana Card if you have a qualifying condition.
Strains
If you know anything about cannabis, you've likely heard the terms indica, sativa, and hybrid. These words are used to describe the effects that different strains will have on your brain and body. However, these are very generalized terms, and each strain, compound, and consumption method will have its own effects.
Methods of Consumption
In the state of New Jersey, ten different forms of cannabis have been approved for consumption: flower, topicals, oils, transdermals, concentrates, tinctures, chewables, lozenges, tablets, and capsules. Each form is administered differently, and each has its own unique onset time and duration of effect.
How does cannabis affect us?
Our bodies naturally create cannabis-like chemicals in what is called the Endocannabinoid System. These help to regulate our mood, memory, appetite, and more. Because the molecular structure of cannabis closely resembles these pre-existing chemicals, your brain recognizes them and allows them to attach to your receptors, giving you the "high" feeling you experience when consuming marijuana.
Safe & Responsible Consumption
Cannabis has been known to help many people with various illnesses and chronic conditions. However, the THC compounds found in marijuana has a psychoactive effect that can impair balance, movement, and judgement. Fortunately, whether you are a medical patient or a recreational consumer, there are some steps you can take to ensure that your cannabis journey is safe and enjoyable.
Terpenes
There are more than 200 individual terpenes found in the cannabis plant. These organic compounds give cannabis strains their unique flavors, aromas, and effects.
